The beginning of the Hebrew month is called Rosh Chodesh, or in English “The Head of the Month.” Each month has its own special feeling and flavor, depending on what holidays and other memorial days are included in the month, as well as the type of weather which is usually characterizes that month. The month of Adar is no exception, whose Rosh Chodesh we are celebrating on February 14th and 15th this year. When Adar arrives, there is usually a real feeling that springtime is upon us. The days are growing longer; the weather is not as cold and wet as the winter months of Kislev, Tevet and Shevat. Buds are beginning to appear on the trees, and a few brave flowers are beginning to climb out of the earth and spread their leaves and stems towards the sky. Even more than the changing weather, the holiday of Purim is celebrated in the month of Adar. This year Purim falls on Sunday, February 28th, and commemorates the great victory of the Jewish community living in Persia over their enemies that wanted to massacre them on that same date. The Book of Esther is read on Purim, and a great festive meal is shared by friends and families. Gifts of food and drink, candies and cakes, are distributed, along with charity to the poor. One of the most beloved activities which children especially find endearing which is done on Purim is the wearing of masks and costumes. There is no question that Purim is a wonderful day of celebration and joy.
